Surfing In San Diego

Surfers at Pacific Beach, San Diego, California
Everybody in surf culture knows about San Diego's epic waves and beaches -- as it has been a popular place to surf for many years.  Some of the world's best surfers grew up surfing these waves and have been so lucky as to call San Diego home.  The beaches are big and vast as well as the waves being varied and incredibly fun. The beaches of San Diego have a bit of something for everyone. They also have quite a large amount of sunshine and good times for each and every person who decides to visit their sands, boardwalks, and waves.

Some beaches are better than others for surfing -- and there are definitely reef breaks in San Diego -- but those are reserved for the extremely skilled and brave of heart. Some of the reef breaks can be quite dangerous if not approached with skill and care.  For most of us, places like Pacific Beach as well as Mission Beach and Ocean Beach are great places to sunbathe and play in the water. Whether it be surfing, bodyboarding, bodysurfing, swimming, Frisbee, Smashball playing, or just lounging around in the sun -- these places are the spot to be.

Pacific beach, San Diego - 16     For a nice long stroll along a boardwalk, it's no question that Pacific Beach (or PB, as the locals like to call it) and Mission Beach are the place to do that. They boast a very long boardwalk that is perfect for miles of strolls, people-watching & sunset watching, and also a very nice array of restaurants and shops along the way. On one end you have Mission Beach and all of it's personality and charm, including the famous Belmont Park with it's well-known roller coaster. Follow it down past the Wavehouse (An awesome place to see people surfing on a very fast and large man-made wave, up close and personal... as well as to have a nice brew or cocktail and some food) then all the way through Mission Beach to Pacific Beach and it's expansive Beaches and cliff-side boardwalk that leads to North PB and the La Jolla area near Tourmaline surf spot (A very popular longboarding spot with a mellow and forever-long wave).
